The up & down buttonhole stitch is a variation on regular buttonhole or blanket stitch. Up & down buttonhole creates a scalloped-looking line of buttonhole stitches, with two stitches tied together and locked down with a loop.
Up & down buttonhole stitch is a fun line stitch to work, and once you get the hang of how the stitch is made, you’ll find that it works up very quickly! In the photo above, you can see two lines of up & down buttonhole stitch – it creates a very pretty band stitch that can be used as an edge or border. The stitch works well around gentle curves and circles, too – play with it, to see what you can do with it! Pretty much anything you can do with a buttonhole stitch, you can do with this stitch.
