Well, at long last, for those who have been waiting for The Leafy Tree in e-book form, it is finally available! Yay!

If you’re familiar with the Leafy Tree project as it was presented on the website, please note that there are significant changes in this e-book, which is sold independently from any kit.

So please read everything below so that you understand what you’re receiving with this e-book. I don’t want anyone to be disappointed!

It is a PDF

The Leafy Tree is not a book and it won’t come to you in printed form through the regular post. It is a PDF file, delivered via a download link sent to your email address. There are many advantages to an e-book like this – not the least of which is that you can zoom in and view images in detail, more than you ever could in a printed book. Additionally, it is delivered right away, so you don’t have to wait for it!

Project Level, Size

The Leafy Tree project is suitable for intermediate embroiderers who know the basics of hand embroidery, such as: how to transfer a design, how to read stitch instructions, how to set up a hoop or frame, how to work with one and two strands of floss on a fine scale, and so forth.

That said, it is accessible to the determined beginner.

If you are an absolute beginner, it might not be the first project to start with, but it really depends on your level of determination. If you’ve stitched before, you should be able to handle the project. If you’ve never threaded a needle in your life, but you’re absolutely determined to learn on this project because you really like it, then I’m not going to say you can’t do it. It’s up to you!

This article will give you an idea of the size of the design.

Threads & Supplies

I stitched the original “early autumn” model of the tree on Alba Maxima linen, which is no longer available. Any higher count, full weave hand embroidery linen will work for the design. It can also be stitched on cotton, silk, wool, a blend – whatever ground fabric you wish.

If the weave is a little loser or finer – if the threads don’t fill the weave – you’ll need to back the ground fabric with cotton muslin (calico) or batiste, so that it supports the dense stitching.

Originally, I used Madeira cotton floss on this design.

I have re-written this version of the e-book, using DMC 6-stranded cotton. The color matches are as close to the original as possible (and in several cases, better than the original!). In the few instances where I used variegated threads on the original (two colors in the original Madeira cotton), I’ve substituted four colors of DMC variations, to get a more accurate color blending.

There are no Madeira colors listed in this version.

Should I make kits available in the future, they will include the DMC colors and a new linen that I’m working with. I may re-stock kits for this at some point, if I have time to make them. Since I now have a new set-up for transferring designs for kits, it may be feasible to put a limited number together, if I can chase down supplies.

Stitching Procedures

You don’t have to follow the order of stitching or the stitching procedures in the e-book. You can substitute stitches, colors, etc. to your heart’s content! That is the wonderful thing about embroidery. You can make your own uniquely-you version by mixing things up.

The thread colors listed in the e-book will give you enough greens (from dark to bright to yellow-greens) to stitch a corresponding spring tree, as well.
